Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) slammed President Donald Trump on Monday, accusing Trump of favoring oil producers and fossil fuel companies with his policies despite environmental concerns.
Big Oil Handouts
In a post on X, Sanders criticized the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) decision to repeal President Joe Biden-era greenhouse gas standards on power plants, with EPA administrator Lee Zeldin touting it as a move to keep energy prices affordable.
“We just saw the hottest summer in US recorded history,” the Vermont Independent said in his post. “August tied for the hottest global month in recorded history,” Sanders added. He then slammed Trump.
“Trump’s response is more handouts for Big Oil,” he said, adding that Trump cannot be allowed to “trade” the future of the planet in exchange for “short-term profits of his Big Oil billionaire friends.”
Big Oil Criticism
The comments come as oil producers recorded windfall profits amid the ongoing war with Iran that has caused heightened fuel costs across the U.S. Sanders had earlier criticized oil companies, saying that oil companies were “ripping off” Americans through heightened prices.
The national average price of a gallon of gas on Sunday exceeded the $4.3 mark. In August, Gov. Jay Robert ‘JB’ Pritzker (D-IL), amid profits, demanded that oil companies refund people their money. The Governor noted that oil companies return the money through “price reductions at the pump, direct refunds, or other means.”
Iran War
Meanwhile, Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) accused Trump and Energy Secretary Chris Wright of engaging in the war with Iran despite knowing the impact the situation would have on energy costs in the U.S. Newsom slammed Trump by questioning why the administration had not shielded Americans from energy shocks.
