Alibaba Group Holding Limited (NYSE:BABA) stock slid 3% lower Wednesday as investors weighed the company’s aggressive AI expansion against persistent technical weakness, even as the broader U.S. market and consumer discretionary sector moved higher.
The Nasdaq gained 1.13%, the S&P 500 rose 0.44% and Consumer Discretionary advanced 0.20%, leaving Alibaba moving against the broader market.

Alibaba Expands AI Computing Capacity
Alibaba remains focused on building artificial-intelligence capabilities across computing infrastructure, consumer hardware and its Qwen ecosystem.
The company joined other Chinese technology giants in placing more than $35 billion in combined orders for NVIDIA Corp. (NASDAQ:NVDA) RTX PRO 5500 chips, according to Reuters.
The orders underscore demand for additional AI computing capacity, although Nvidia has warned customers that supply may fall well short of Chinese demand.
Qwen Push Expands Into Wearables
Alibaba also expanded Qwen into consumer hardware with its Qwen Glasses N1 lineup and Qwen Clip earbuds, developed with Bose.
The devices support translation, meeting summaries, voice services and other AI-assisted tasks. The Pro glasses add health monitoring, eye tracking and iris verification.
Qwen Vice President Song Gang said, “The goal of Qwen is to become everyone’s Personal Agent.”
The launch places Alibaba in closer competition with Meta Platforms Inc. (NASDAQ:META) in AI-powered smart glasses while extending Qwen deeper into Alibaba’s consumer ecosystem.
CEO Eddie Wu has positioned the company around a full-stack AI strategy spanning models, applications, chips, data centers and consumer devices.
China Market Volatility Adds Pressure
Alibaba shares also remain sensitive to broader swings in Chinese technology stocks.
Earlier in October, U.S.-listed Chinese stocks rallied amid speculation that authorities intervened to curb selling, although traders could not confirm the precise trigger.
Technical Trend Remains Bearish
Alibaba trades 4% below its 20-day SMA, 7.8% below its 50-day SMA, 8.1% below its 100-day SMA and 18.5% below its 200-day SMA.
The 20-day average remains below the 50-day average, while the Death Cross formed in April — when the 50-day SMA dropped below the 200-day SMA — continues to signal longer-term technical weakness.
Analysts Remain Bullish
Alibaba carries a Buy consensus rating with an average price target of $189.67.
JPMorgan maintained Overweight while lowering its forecast to $200 on Oct. 12. Citigroup maintained Buy and raised its forecast to $193 on Oct. 8, while Susquehanna maintained Positive and increased its forecast to $190 on Aug. 28.
