Stryker Makes $400 Million Robotic Surgery Bet

Stryker Corporation (NYSE:SYK) said Monday it will invest approximately $400 million in robotics company CMR Surgical as it expands into soft-tissue robotic surgery.

The strategic partnership gives Stryker an exclusive option to acquire all of CMR Surgical’s outstanding equity in the future.

Under the agreement, Stryker will become the exclusive U.S. sales agent for CMR’s Versius surgical robotic portfolio.

Stryker Expands Robotic Surgery Business

The partnership combines CMR Surgical’s soft-tissue robotic technology and clinical experience with Stryker’s commercial reach and customer relationships.

Stryker will handle U.S. sales, while CMR will continue developing the Versius portfolio and managing commercialization outside the United States.

The companies aim to meet growing demand for robotic-assisted surgery by offering hospitals and outpatient facilities a flexible, scalable system.

William Blair Sees Growth Opportunity In Outpatient Surgery

William Blair analyst Steven Lichtman views the deal as a strategic growth opportunity that allows Stryker to expand without directly challenging the robotic surgery market leader.

Lichtman said CMR’s smaller robotic systems could create opportunities in ambulatory surgery centers (ASCs), where Stryker already has a strong and growing presence.

The partnership also aligns with the broader shift toward outpatient procedures as more surgeries move away from traditional hospital settings.

Furthermore, the deal strengthens Stryker’s ability to supply ASCs with implants, surgical instruments, equipment and robotic technology.

Entering 2026, Stryker had already installed more than 200 Mako orthopedic robotic systems in ASCs.

Lichtman expects Stryker’s existing endoscopy, operating room equipment and ASC relationships to support the early U.S. rollout of Versius Plus.

The system has received clearance for gallbladder removal procedures, while its gynecological application remains under regulatory review.

William Blair maintains an Outperform rating on Stryker.

SYK Price Action: Stryker shares were up 0.03% at $282.69 at the time of publication on Tuesday, according to Benzinga Pro data.
