Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) slammed President Donald Trump for claiming the Strait of Hormuz was free of mines amid ongoing tensions with Iran.
Newsom’s Press Office Questions Trump’s Mine-Clearing Claim
In a post on X on Tuesday, the California Governor’s Press Office quoted a post by Jennifer Jacobs, a White House reporter who shared a screenshot of Trump’s Truth Social post about the waterway being free of mines.
Newsom’s Press Office shared a screenshot of a Truth Social post made by Trump on August 18, in which the President said that the water mines in the Strait of Hormuz were “removed” or “detonated,” while also saying that the Strait of Hormuz was open.
“Flashback to last week when Trump said the mines were cleared … was he lying then?” the Press Office handle asked in its post.

The news comes as Trump had earlier issued new economic measures against Iran, as well as warned that countries trading with Tehran could also face economic backlash from the U.S. On the other hand, Iran vowed that oil would not pass through the Strait of Hormuz, slamming Washington’s economic measures.
Iran and Oman have begun discussions on a temporary navigational corridor through the Strait, along with a joint project to clear mines from the waterway.
Earlier, Vice President JD Vance had said that oil was moving through the Strait of Hormuz and backed Trump’s economic measures against Iran as an effective tool to ensure the waterway reopened. Trump’s Energy Secretary Chris Wright had also claimed that the U.S. was aiding the movement of oil through the region.
