Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG) shares are trading lower Wednesday as a broader selloff hits companies seen as vulnerable to disruption from Meta’s rapidly growing Muse AI agent. Here’s what you should know.

Muse’s Rapid Rise Sparks a Broader Market Selloff
A wide swath of financial and travel stocks took a hit Tuesday as Wall Street began pricing in the risk that AI tools like Muse could chip away at businesses that thrive on customers sticking with a provider out of habit rather than actively choosing the best option, according to Bloomberg.
Behind the move was Muse’s sudden surge to the top of Apple’s U.S. App Store, a milestone that helped send Meta Platforms Inc. (NASDAQ:META) shares up 11% the previous session. The assistant plugs into everyday services on a user’s behalf, including Gmail, Google Calendar and Google Docs, according to a thread on X from Meta’s chief AI officer, Alexandr Wang, who emphasized that Muse doesn’t feed user data into advertising systems.
Goldman Flags “Consumer Inertia” Stocks At Risk
Goldman Sachs’ trading desk warned in a note that businesses built around recurring charges, negotiable pricing or bolt-on fees could lose ground as AI agents get sharper at comparing prices, arranging travel and navigating customer support. The bank’s basket of vulnerable stocks includes AT&T, T-Mobile, Allstate, Progressive, Netflix, Paramount Skydance, Expedia and Booking.
Citrini Research, whose bearish February report weighed on delivery and software stocks, argued consumers may soon scrutinize companies whose profits depend on friction that discourages switching.
Alphabet’s situation looks different from the companies Goldman named outright. Several of Google’s own products, including Gmail, Calendar and Docs, are among the tools Muse can already tap into. That’s raised a separate concern: if AI agents start handling tasks directly rather than routing users through a browser or search bar, it could chip away at the search activity Alphabet’s ad business depends on.
GOOG Shares Are Tumbling
