$1.3 Trillion Equity-Fund Rush Is Shattering Records: Tech ETFs That Are in Play

Global equity funds are on track to attract a record $1.3 trillion in inflows in 2026, with U.S. stocks and technology investments emerging as major destinations for investor capital.

The projected annual intake would exceed the previous record set in 2021 by approximately 35%, according to figures shared by The Kobeissi Letter, citing Bank of America Global Investment Strategy data.

U.S. equity funds are projected to attract $636 billion, accounting for nearly half of global equity fund inflows. Meanwhile, global technology funds are on track to draw a record $196 billion, more than double the $75 billion recorded in 2025.

The numbers point to strong demand for equities, but ETF flows offer a closer look at where investors are putting their money.

VOO Leads the Broad-Market ETF Trade

The Vanguard S&P 500 ETF (NYSE:VOO) has attracted $112.8 billion in year-to-date net inflows, according to ETF Central data. The fund had approximately $1.05 trillion in assets under management, making it a major beneficiary of demand for broad U.S. equity exposure.

However, the latest figures also reveal a potential shift in investor behavior. VOO recorded $20.7 billion in net outflows in the past 30 days, despite maintaining substantial positive inflows for the year. This suggests that strong annual demand has not prevented shorter-term withdrawals.

The trend extends beyond Vanguard. LSEG Lipper’s September industry review identified VOO as the best-selling U.S.-listed ETF in the first nine months of 2026, with estimated net inflows of $91.4 billion. The State Street SPDR Portfolio S&P 500 ETF (NYSE:SPYM) followed with $60.9 billion, while the Vanguard Morningstar Total Stock Market ETF (NYSE:VTI) attracted $49.7 billion.

The figures reinforce the appeal of diversified U.S. equity exposure, even as investors reassess positions over shorter periods. They also provide a fund-level perspective on the broader trend of record equity fund inflows projected for 2026.

Semiconductor ETFs Capture the AI Investment Theme

Technology’s projected record inflows also put semiconductor ETFs in focus as investors continue to assess the infrastructure needed to support artificial intelligence.

The iShares Semiconductor ETF (NASDAQ:SOXX) and VanEck Semiconductor ETF (NASDAQ:SMH) are two funds to watch. ETF Central data showed that SOXX attracted $15.95 billion in year-to-date inflows, compared with $9.74 billion for SMH.

The funds provide exposure to semiconductor companies that supply chips and related technology used in AI computing, data centers and other applications.

However, strong inflows do not necessarily mean investors are buying at attractive valuations, nor do they guarantee that the underlying stocks will continue to rise.

Record Inflows Do Not Mean a One-Way Market

Despite the annualized projection, equity fund demand has not been uniform. Global equity funds attracted $20.01 billion in the week through Oct 14, but technology equity funds recorded $4.75 billion in outflows during that period, Reuters reported.

That divergence highlights an important distinction: record annual inflows can coexist with short-term profit-taking and shifting sector preferences.

For ETF investors, the key question is whether capital continues to favor broad U.S. market exposure or increasingly concentrates in technology and semiconductor funds.

The projected $1.3 trillion inflow would mark a historic year for equity funds. But the distribution of that money, rather than the headline total alone, could offer a more revealing picture of investor conviction.
