Why Is Dell Technologies Stock Sinking Wednesday?

Dell Technologies Inc. (NYSE:DELL) stock fell more than 11% on Wednesday after a Barclays downgrade, even as CEO Michael Dell highlighted strong demand for artificial intelligence infrastructure and growing enterprise adoption.

Barclays analyst Tim Long downgraded the stock from Overweight to Equal-Weight and lowered his price forecast to $574 from $603.

Long cited Dell’s stretched valuation and said broader enterprise technology spending has yet to see a significant boost from AI adoption.

Despite Wednesday’s selloff, Dell shares have gained more than 300% in 2026, supported by strong AI server orders and a growing enterprise backlog.

However, Michael Dell struck an optimistic tone in a Wednesday CNBC interview, suggesting that the AI infrastructure boom still has years of growth ahead.

Dell Sees AI Demand Outpacing Supply Through 2030

Dell told CNBC that demand for AI infrastructure continues to exceed supply, a trend he expects to persist through 2030.

He acknowledged that long-term forecasts remain uncertain. However, he pointed to the time required to expand semiconductor manufacturing capacity.

A new chip fabrication plant can take about four years to build, while AI models and their capabilities are advancing much faster.

Meanwhile, increasingly powerful AI systems require newer semiconductors, more memory and greater computing capacity. These requirements are pushing up system costs while driving further infrastructure investment.

Enterprise AI Adoption Is Just Beginning

Dell said frontier AI labs and major technology companies led the initial wave of AI infrastructure spending. Now, broader enterprise adoption is beginning to emerge as another growth driver.

He said AI’s economic impact is already becoming visible, describing the technology’s potential as significant.

However, he emphasized that enterprise adoption remains in its early stages, suggesting companies will need to invest heavily in computing infrastructure as AI use expands.

Dell Explains Its Role Alongside NVIDIA

Dell also distinguished his company’s role from that of NVIDIA Corp. (NASDAQ:NVDA) and CEO Jensen Huang.

He explained that NVIDIA helps develop the technology behind advanced AI systems, while Dell focuses on building the infrastructure customers need to deploy and operate them.

That distinction also shapes Dell’s approach to AI safety. Rather than controlling how individual models are used, the company concentrates on supplying the underlying computing systems.

Still, Dell acknowledged the need for safeguards as AI capabilities advance. He said governments and businesses must establish appropriate guidelines while allowing technological progress to continue.

He expressed confidence about AI’s future through 2030 but stressed that the industry must continue addressing potential risks.

DELL Price Action: Dell Technologies shares were down 11.59% at $506.14 at the time of publication on Wednesday, according to Benzinga Pro data.
