Senate Democrats are formulating a response to the GOP’s final CLARITY Act offer ahead of its procedural vote, according to a report published on Monday.
Democrats Still Not on Board?
The Democrats, who have been negotiating the key piece of cryptocurrency legislation, gathered in Minority Leader Chuck Schumer‘s (D-N.Y.) office Monday night to plan their next moves, reported Politico.
The Republicans’ new bill text, portrayed as their final offer, was made public late Sunday evening
Sen. Cynthia Lummis (R-Wyo.) said the revised text gives state attorneys general direct authority to enforce ethics restrictions on federal officials, while also allowing them to pursue digital asset exchanges and issuers under consumer protection laws.
She added that Trump has “voluntarily agreed” to new ethics provisions.
However, Politico reported that some Democrats found the new ethics language “insufficient.”
‘Nothing Left to Give’
Lummis criticized Democrats for blocking the Clarity Act even after the Republicans conceded to two historic ethics rules they demanded
“It’s becoming clear that some Democrats simply won’t get to yes, no matter what we put in the text,” the senior lawmaker said. “There’s nothing left to give.”
The remark came in response to Sen. Mark Warner (D-Va.) reportedly describing that the ethics provisions as not “near enough.”
Benzinga reached out to Warner for a comment.
The bill still needs 60 votes, meaning all voting Republicans plus at least seven Democrats. Polymarket currently places the CLARITY Act’s passage odds at 18%.
