Trump Approval Rating Falls Lower, Stock Market Gains Can’t Offset Voter Opinion About Iran War

The approval rating for President Donald Trump has fallen in a new NBC News poll, with the handling of the Iran War contributing to the lower ratings.

Trump’s Approval Rating Falls

Similar to other polls in recent months, the approval rating of Trump continues to go lower since he took office in his second term.

In the latest NBC News Decision Desk poll, Trump’s approval rating is 36%, falling one point from the spring poll and setting a new low in the poll. The disapproval rating for Trump at 64% also rose since the spring NBC poll and is the highest for Trump in the poll.

While low polls are nothing new for Trump, his support among his party and loyal supporters could be a concern.

In the poll, Trump has an 80% approval rating from Republican voters. This is down from 83% in the spring NBC poll.

Only 41% of Republicans strongly approve of Trump, which is down from 52% in the spring poll. This marks the first time in the NBC poll that the Republican strongly approve rating was under 50%.

The spring poll was conducted in March and April, while the latest poll was conducted from Aug. 20 through Sept. 1.

Iran War Biggest Factor

The Iran War, which is contributing to higher gas prices at the pump, continues to be a key contributing factor to Trump’s approval rating.

In the latest poll, only 31% of voters say they approve of Trump’s handling of the war with Iran with 69% disapproving. That’s a change from 33% approval, 67% disapproval in the spring poll.

The trend of losing key support from his loyal supporters is also present in approval of Trump’s handling of the Iran War.

Of the Republicans polled, only 30% strongly approve of Trump’s handling of the war, down 18 points from the last poll.

Among those who identify as MAGA Republicans, 43% strongly approve of Trump’s handling of the war, down 21 points.

Trump has hinted that he could declare the war on Iran over soon, and he promises gas will go under $2 when the war is over. Both may be needed to help lift his approval rating.

The stock market continues to outperform, with the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (NYSE:SPY), up 12.1% year-to-date. The key market index hit all-time highs last month, even as the war with Iran wages on.

A healthy stock market isn’t the only indicator of a healthy economy, and the poor ratings for the Iran War could be weighing down the strength of the stock market and the credit Trump gets for indexes near all-time highs.
