Former Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene has criticized President Donald Trump as gas prices continue to hit record highs amid escalating tensions between Washington and Tehran.
$8 Diesel in California
Greene delivered sharp criticism of Trump via a post on the social media platform X on Monday. “I thought we won the war like 50 times already!!!” she said, sharing a screen capture of Trump’s post on the social media platform Truth Social, touting reduced oil prices and a drop in fuel costs across the U.S. when the war with Iran is won.
“Diesel is nearly $6 per gallon, will soon go past $8 per gallon in California,” she said, also pointing towards record-high gas price, which Greene said, was at the “highest it’s ever been in history” during the Labor Day weekend. “It’s so much winning we can hardly take it,” she added.
$100 Billion in Excess Fuel Costs
Amid escalating tensions with Iran, a study by The Watson School of International and Public Affairs at the Ivy League member school Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, illustrated that Americans had spent over $100 billion in excess fuel costs since the beginning of the war in Iran back in February.
Americans spent over $55.1 billion on gasoline, while also spending over $45.52 billion in excess diesel costs. “Fuel costs are just one part of a war’s consequences, but they come directly out of Americans’ pockets,” the study said.
Across roughly 131 million households, Americans spent, on average, $421.05 per household in excess costs on gas. Texas and California led the excess costs incurred on gas at $5.1 billion and $4.7 billion, respectively, the study said. According to data from the American Automobile Association (AAA), the national average price for a gallon of gasoline was $4.1514 on Tuesday.
The national average price for diesel was $5.9012/gallon. In California, prices remained elevated as the average price of gas across the state was $5.8658/gallon. On the other hand, diesel neared the $8 mark at $7.8276/gallon on Tuesday.
