JP Morgan analyst Anthony Elian initiated coverage on UMB Financial Corporation (NASDAQ:UMBF) with a Overweight rating and announced price forecast of $180.
The analyst notes that the company has UMB has grown into a top-25 U.S. bank with $72 billion in assets and ~200 branches across the Midwest, Southwest and West.
Its diversified platform spans commercial and consumer banking, private wealth and institutional banking, complemented by growing fee-based businesses.
The analyst says that UMB’s diversified model is complemented by a strong traditional banking franchise.
Elian expects normalized loan and deposit growth in the high-single-digit range, above the industry’s mid-single-digit average.
Its loan-to-deposit ratio was approximately 70% in the second quarter versus about 85% for peers, giving the bank flexibility to grow loans even if deposit growth slows, adds the analyst.
Elian writes that the Heartland Financial acquisition, completed in early 2025, significantly expanded UMB’s Midwest and West footprint, strengthened retail banking, added a granular core deposit base, and increased scale across commercial banking and fee-based businesses.
The analyst’s adds that the company’s credit quality remains a key strength, with NCO and NPA levels consistently below industry averages through multiple economic cycles, supporting capital preservation, steady profitability and UMB’s reputation for conservative management.

In July, UMB Financial reported second quarter adjusted EPS of $3.57, topping the $3.13 estimate.
Also, sales of $778.0 million exceeded the $727.6 million consensus. .The company also raised its quarterly dividend to $0.50 per share from $0.43.
