The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Wednesday authorized the modular premarket approval application pathway for FemBloc, a non-surgical permanent birth control technology.
Femasys Inc. (NASDAQ:FEMY) announced the regulatory milestone for its investigational contraceptive device.
Office-Based Alternative To Surgical Sterilization
FemBloc represents a first-of-its-kind permanent birth control option designed specifically for delivery within a standard OB/GYN office setting. During the procedure, physicians utilize a patented delivery system to place a separately patented blended polymer directly into both fallopian tubes.
Once inserted, the polymer safely degrades and promotes the growth of natural scar tissue. This tissue eventually creates a permanent occlusion, effectively blocking the tubes and preventing pregnancy.
Unlike traditional surgical sterilization methods, the FemBloc procedure requires absolutely no anesthesia, surgical incisions, or post-procedure recovery time.
The non-surgical approach provides women with a highly convenient and more affordable contraceptive alternative.
Furthermore, the in-office treatment allows patients to completely avoid the various health complications and risks typically associated with invasive surgery.
“FDA approval of the modular PMA pathway provides a clear and efficient framework for advancing FemBloc toward U.S. approval, allowing key components of the submission to be reviewed by FDA in advance of the final clinical data,” said Kathy Lee-Sepsick, CEO and Founder of Femasys.
