JB Pritzker Defends Billions in CTA Funding as Illinois Rejects Service Cuts and Fare Hikes: ‘Invest, Modernize and Build’

Gov. JB Pritzker (D-Ill.) defended the state’s multibillion-dollar investment in public transportation, arguing that strengthening transit is critical to the state’s economy and millions of daily riders.

Pritzker Defends Illinois Transit Investment

On Saturday, in a post on X while sharing a clip of his speech, Pritzker said Illinois is taking a different approach from cities and states that have responded to transit funding pressures with service reductions and higher fares.

“Across the country, too many cities and states are responding to their challenges by cutting service, raising fares, and asking riders to accept less,” Pritzker wrote.

“Illinois chose to invest, modernize and build,” he added.

He further said, “It’s the right thing to do for our people and our economy.”

Illinois Approves $1.5 Billion Transit Funding

In a video, Pritzker said public transportation is too important to Illinois’ economy and residents’ daily lives to accept deteriorating service.

He highlighted more than $2 billion in capital funding for the Chicago Transit Authority through the state’s Rebuild Illinois infrastructure program, including funding for modernization projects.

Pritzker also pointed to the Northern Illinois Transit Authority Act, which he described as a “once in a generation investment and reform package.”

According to Pritzker, the measure provides $1.5 billion annually to support transit operations across Illinois.

He said pandemic-era financial pressures had threatened “devastating service cuts and fare increases” that could have affected millions of CTA riders.

Autonomous Vehicles Reshape Future Transit

Earlier, Elon Musk has promoted “individualized mass transit,” envisioning autonomous electric vehicles and multilevel tunnels as a faster, more personalized alternative to traditional trains.

He has also argued that vacuum tunnels could enable extremely fast long-distance travel.

Meanwhile, Wayve and Uber Technologies, Inc (NYSE:UBER) are advancing autonomous transportation in the U.K. through plans for Level 4 self-driving vehicle trials on London’s public roads.

The pilot would combine Wayve’s Embodied AI technology with Uber’s mobility network and could eventually support wider autonomous vehicle deployment across Europe.

The companies planned to work with the U.K. government and Transport for London to secure regulatory approval.

The government estimated that accelerated self-driving adoption could create 38,000 jobs and add £42 billion to the U.K. economy.
