Nvidia Stock Climbs Amid Oil Price Drop

Nvidia Corp. (NASDAQ:NVDA) shares are trading higher Tuesday as chipmakers rebound from a sharp Friday selloff, with cheaper oil and hopes of negotiations with Iran supporting the market.

Nvidia Stock Climbs as the Chip Selloff Eases

Nvidia shares are higher Tuesday as chipmakers regain ground after a rough few sessions. On Friday, 23 leading chip and equipment makers lost about $1.01 trillion by late morning, and Nvidia suffered the biggest loss in dollars. A 3.6% decline sounds small, but on a company valued near $5 trillion it translated into roughly $185 billion of lost value.

Five companies, Nvidia among them, drove the bulk of the losses. Intel, AMD, TSMC and Broadcom were the others, and the five together accounted for roughly 60% of the group’s losses. Intel started the rout when a disappointing fourth-quarter outlook sent its stock down 28.4%, to $65.92.

The Nasdaq Composite had gained about 0.81% by Tuesday’s mid-morning check, recouping part of Monday’s 1.07% decline, while the S&P 500 rose 0.38%. The Dow, meanwhile, slipped 0.49%. Ten-year Treasuries yielded 4.958%, up on the day, and midterm voting continues with no results yet.

The sector’s rebound could owe something to cheaper oil as investors wait on the outcome. Lower energy prices can ease inflation worries and cut the odds of higher interest rates, which tends to help growth stocks like chipmakers because their value rests on earnings expected years from now. Peace hopes may also lower the risk of supply disruptions.

Cheaper Oil and Iran Talks Give Chips a Lift

Oil’s slide began Monday, when hints from President Donald Trump of progress toward a settlement with Iran sent crude down more than 7%. West Texas Intermediate fell to $96.46 and Brent to $104.77. Tehran sounded receptive as well, with Iran’s president saying the supreme leader had approved broader negotiating powers.

Tuesday’s optimism met a setback. Reuters reported American strikes on Qeshm Island, beside the narrow waterway, and crude crept higher, with U.S. benchmark crude near $97.01 and Brent around $105.22 early on.

Pavel Molchanov of Raymond James cautioned that earlier talks have repeatedly stalled, while Goldman Sachs sees a path to $140 Brent in 2027 should Gulf supply remain depressed.

NVDA Shares Are Rising

NVDA Price Action: Nvidia shares were up 2.45% at $207.02 at the time of publication on Tuesday, according to Benzinga Pro.
