SELLAS Stock Pulls Back After Phase 3 Trial Milestone
SELLAS said Wednesday that enough patients in its Phase 3 REGAL trial have passed away to start the study’s final analysis. The plan called for 80 deaths, and the trial has now reached that count. The company expects to share early top-line findings on the trial’s main goal within the current quarter.
The trial tests galinpepimut-S, or GPS, an experimental immunotherapy for acute myeloid leukemia, a cancer of the blood and bone marrow. The trial enrolled patients who reached a second complete remission after a relapse, and GPS aims to help keep the disease from coming back.
What Happens Next for SELLAS
REGAL follows how long patients live, so deaths, not dates, set its schedule. Now that the count is reached, SELLAS will freeze the data, learn who received GPS and who did not and then analyze the results. Researchers mainly want to know whether GPS helps patients live longer. Whether it keeps leukemia away, plus other outcomes, are secondary questions.
CEO Angelos Stergiou called the 80th death “a critical milestone.” A positive readout, he said, could establish GPS as the top new immunotherapy for second-remission patients, a group with few options today.
Reaching the death count means the trial is ready for analysis, but it says nothing about whether GPS worked. That answer comes with the top-line findings before the quarter ends. Until then, the stock faces a major unknown that could cut either way.
