On Holding Stock Drops After Mbappé’s Controversial Comment

On Holding AG (NYSE:ONON) shares are falling Tuesday as Chinese companies end their deals with Kylian Mbappé. Here’s what you should know.

On Holding Stock Falls After Mbappé Backlash in China

A video of Mbappé set off the uproar. The captain of France’s national team, who suits up for Real Madrid, is heard describing the meme he found funniest, one that pastes his face onto a man he took to be a “Chinese dictator.” Reuters reported that the remark appeared to reference a meme depicting his face on Mao Zedong, the founding leader of China.

Chinese audiences consider any mockery of Mao, who led the country from 1949 to 1976, disrespectful. Mbappé responded Tuesday on X, calling his remark “ill-judged” and saying it wounded many Chinese people. He added that he deeply respects China and its history.

Why Mbappé’s Comments Matter for On Holding

On Holding makes sportswear, and Mbappé is one of its most visible partners. The company recently named him the face of its new soccer line, which ties its soccer push to an athlete now shunned by Chinese companies.

In Reuters’ telling, China is a high-stakes market where a celebrity’s standing can unravel quickly. China’s state broadcaster has reportedly dropped LaLiga games and any appearances by Mbappé, and ads with him have been removed. If his visibility in China shrinks, On Holding gets less return from the partnership. Other brands have paid for similar missteps there, including Dolce & Gabbana, Swatch and the NBA.

Chinese Companies Drop Mbappé Over Remark

Chinese consumer companies moved first. Shanghai Milkground Food Tech, Mengniu and Eastroc Beverage severed every tie with Mbappé at once, saying they show “zero tolerance” toward words or deeds that offend the Chinese public.

Online, the pressure is mounting. Four Mbappé topics sat in Weibo’s top-ten trending list Tuesday morning, and some users demanded that China blacklist him. A Foreign Ministry spokesperson warned that anything wounding Chinese public feeling will draw a unified response across society.

LaLiga chief Javier Tebas apologized on X, while Real Madrid offered no comment.

ONON Shares Are Sliding

ONON Price Action: On Holding shares were down 3.83% at $31.90 at the time of publication on Tuesday, according to Benzinga Pro.
