Rivian Automotive Inc. (NASDAQ:RIVN) announced Thursday that it acquired Third Dimension AI Inc. to strengthen its autonomous driving technology and accelerate the development of advanced driver-assistance systems.
The company did not disclose the financial terms of the Oct. 22 acquisition.
The deal brings Third Dimension AI’s 3D simulation platform and engineering expertise into Rivian’s autonomous driving operations.
AI-Powered Simulation to Improve Autonomous Driving
Third Dimension AI, founded by Tolga Kart and Piotr Sokolski, develops technology that converts real-world data into detailed, controllable 3D environments.
Its platform allows developers to recreate complex driving situations and test different conditions through simulations.
By integrating this technology, Rivian aims to generate synthetic training data and improve how its autonomous systems respond to challenging road conditions.
The approach also allows Rivian to test rare driving scenarios without waiting for those situations to occur on public roads.
Acquisition Supports Consumer and Robotaxi Plans
James Philbin, Rivian’s senior vice president of autonomy and AI, said simulation plays a central role in training and validating the company’s self-driving systems.
He said Third Dimension AI’s technology would help Rivian recreate challenging driving conditions, improve system responses and accelerate development across its consumer vehicle and robotaxi programs.
Third Dimension AI co-founder and CEO Tolga Kart said the acquisition would allow the company to deploy its simulation technology on a larger scale.
The integration is expected to support both autonomous driving model training and safety validation.
Third Dimension AI’s leadership and technical teams will join Rivian’s autonomy research and engineering operations.

Rivian’s Financial Position
Rivian held approximately $5.3 billion in cash, cash equivalents and short-term investments as of June 30, 2026.
The acquisition adds simulation capabilities to Rivian’s in-house technology portfolio as the electric vehicle maker continues developing its autonomous driving systems.
Rivian is also expanding its autonomous driving ambitions, with plans to deploy fully autonomous versions of its R2 SUV as robotaxis.
The vehicles are expected to become available through Uber Technologies Inc. (NYSE:UBER) in 2028, according to TechCrunch.
The acquisition of Third Dimension AI could support those plans by allowing Rivian to train and test its autonomous driving systems in simulated environments.
