Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) questioned on Thursday what the U.S. has accomplished during the nearly eight-month war with Iran that started under President Donald Trump.
War Led to Loss of American Lives, Says Warren
Warren said the war has killed as many as 23 U.S. service members and cost more than $45 billion. Pentagon casualty data publicly listed 21 deaths and 865 wounded in operations against Iran as of Oct. 10, a figure first reported by The New York Times.
Similarly, the Pentagon informed Congress last month that the war has cost $45.1 billion, of which $1.5 billion was for additional fuel, according to a CNN report.
“Nobody can seem to explain what this war has accomplished or when it will end,” Warren added.
Warren Questions What Trump’s Iran War Has Accomplished
Warren’s remarks arrived amid declining political support for Trump. A recent poll found 31% of Americans approved of his performance, the lowest approval level across his two presidential terms, amid rising prices and mounting economic pressures.
Gasoline jumped 9.1% in September, accounting for more than half of the monthly increase. Consumer prices rose 3.7% year over year in September.
Economist Peter Schiff warned the conflict could prompt the Federal Reserve to consider additional quantitative easing, which he argues would fuel more inflation.
Meanwhile, Polygon (CRYPTO: POL)-based Polymarket priced in a 69% chance that Democrats take control of both the Senate and the House after the midterms, up from 63% a week ago.
