Something unusual is happening in one of the quietest corner of the market.
Procter & Gamble Co (NYSE:PG) shares rose more than 6% on Thursday, its biggest single-day gain since March 26, 2020.
In roughly 14,000 trading sessions since 1970, the stock has moved that much in a day only about 20 times.
The trigger looks ordinary.
First-quarter organic sales grew 4%, core earnings per share rose 1% to $2, and management kept its fiscal 2027 outlook unchanged while flagging about $1.4 billion in after-tax headwinds from energy, transportation and raw material costs.
Nothing in that mix explains the best day in six years.
Defensive stocks rallied Thursday as a violent rotation out of AI-driven names took place. The Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR Fund (NYSE:XLP) gained 2.6%, while the Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund (NYSE:XLK) sunk over 3%.
Shares of P&G are also on track to close at their highest level since February.
