Republican Sen. Bernie Moreno (R-Ohio) plans to introduce legislation to expand President Donald Trump’s investment accounts to Americans under 40, arguing that broader eligibility could help working families buy homes, repay student loans and build long-term wealth.
Moreno Pushes Broader Access To Investment Accounts
“This is a game-changer and I’ll lead the bill in the Senate to make it happen,” Moreno wrote Tuesday on X. “Trump Accounts are already transforming lives for families across America.”
Moreno said expanding eligibility would “give hardworking Americans powerful new tools to buy homes, wipe out student debt, and invest in their own futures.”
His office confirmed the legislative initiative on October 20 through a press release, although lawmakers have yet to finalize the proposed program’s funding and withdrawal rules.
Altimeter Capital CEO Brad Gerstner has also advocated extending eligibility to Americans under 40 while making government funding permanent.
Trump separately acknowledged discussions about an adult-focused program, saying, “We are looking at something different, because it is somewhat of a different thing, having to do with adults.”
Treasury Expands Enrollment And Investment Options
The administration automatically enrolled more than 60 million additional children, bringing total accounts to nearly 70 million.
Treasury provides a one-time $1,000 contribution to eligible American children born between January 2025 and December 2028, although parents must claim their accounts to receive the funding.
The accounts initially invest contributions in State Street’s SPDR Portfolio S&P 500 exchange-traded fund, with four additional low-cost funds available under Treasury’s investment lineup.
Musk And Dell Back Children’s Investment Program
Elon Musk recently pledged one SpaceX share to every American child next year, adding to growing corporate and philanthropic support.
Meanwhile, Michael Dell and Susan Dell pledged $6.25 billion to provide $250 each to 25 million qualifying children, a White House press release in December 2025 noted.
It is worth noting that Moreno’s planned expansion would require congressional approval, leaving its eventual eligibility criteria, funding, and benefits uncertain.
