Marlboro Maker Philip Morris Leans on Higher Cigarette Prices to Fight Rising Costs

Philip Morris International Inc. (NYSE:PM) stock fell Wednesday after the tobacco company lowered its 2026 earnings outlook despite reporting third-quarter results that beat Wall Street estimates.

The company cited rising energy costs, geopolitical tensions and increased investments in its smoke-free products business as key pressures on profitability.

Philip Morris Beats Earnings and Revenue Estimates

Philip Morris reported adjusted earnings of $2.36 per share, up 5.4% year over year and above the analyst estimate of $2.29.

Revenue rose 5.5% to $11.44 billion, beating Wall Street’s estimate of $11.28 billion.

Organic revenue increased 7.1%, driven largely by higher prices in its international cigarette business and U.S. operations.

The company’s smoke-free products and international cigarette businesses continued to support growth.

However, reported earnings fell 4.9% to $2.12 per share, mainly due to a noncash fair value adjustment related to equity investments.

Adjusted operating income increased 9.6% to $5.12 billion. Adjusted operating margin expanded to 44.7% from 43.1% a year earlier.

The company’s adjusted gross profit rose 6.7% to $7.86 billion, while gross margin improved 80 basis points to 68.7%.

Higher cigarette prices, increased scale and a favorable product mix in the smoke-free business supported margins.

Smoke-Free Products Fuel Growth

Total shipment volume increased 0.6% to 206.2 billion equivalent units.

Smoke-free shipments rose 2.7%, supported by 1.5% growth in IQOS heated tobacco units and a 61.6% increase in e-vapor shipments.

Cigarette shipments remained flat at 158 billion units.

Smoke-free products generated more than 40% of total revenue and were available in 110 markets.

International smoke-free revenue edged up 0.7% to $3.87 billion, supported by higher shipments.

VEEV shipments surged 61.6%, while international modern oral nicotine product volumes increased 20.6%.

Meanwhile, international combustible tobacco revenue rose 6.5% to $6.7 billion, driven by an 8.9% increase in pricing.

Strong performance in Turkey, Indonesia and Egypt helped offset weakness in other markets.

Marlboro maintained a record 11.4% share of the international cigarette market.

U.S. ZYN Sales Rise As Investments Weigh on Profit

Philip Morris reported a 22.7% increase in U.S. revenue to $845 million.

Shipments of its ZYN nicotine pouches rose 4.2% to 3.2 billion pouches.

However, operating companies income declined 3.3% as Philip Morris increased commercial spending to expand its ZYN portfolio.

Management expects additional investments in the fourth quarter to support the brand’s growth.

The company also received U.S. Food and Drug Administration authorization for 11 ZYN ULTRA variants on Aug. 21.

Middle East and Ukraine Conflicts Add Cost Pressures

Philip Morris said the Middle East conflict remains manageable but is increasingly affecting its operations.

Higher energy-related costs pressured the business during the third quarter. Management expects a slightly greater impact in the fourth quarter as additional price increases take effect.

The Ukraine conflict also disrupted supply chains and logistics operations in certain locations.

The company expects these disruptions to weigh on full-year operating income.

Philip Morris Cuts 2026 Earnings Outlook

Philip Morris lowered its 2026 reported earnings forecast to $7.11 to $7.26 per share from its previous outlook of $7.28 to $7.43.

The revised range is below the analyst consensus estimate of $7.72 per share.

The company also reduced its adjusted earnings outlook to $8.29 to $8.44 per share from $8.35 to $8.50. Wall Street expects $8.41 per share.

Despite the earnings cut, Philip Morris maintained its organic revenue growth forecast of 5% to 7%.

Management sees a greater likelihood of growth landing in the middle or upper half of that range, supported by an expected fourth-quarter acceleration in its international smoke-free business.

The company expects organic operating income growth of 7% to 9%, reflecting geopolitical cost pressures and increased U.S. investments.

Philip Morris continues to project operating cash flow of about $13.5 billion and capital expenditures of $1.4 billion to $1.6 billion, primarily to expand its smoke-free business.

Management expects net debt to adjusted EBITDA to reach about 2.0 times by year-end. The company does not plan to repurchase shares in 2026.

Total shipment volume is expected to increase, supported by high-single-digit growth in smoke-free products. Cigarette shipments are expected to decline at a pace similar to the year-to-date trend.

Management remains confident in the growth potential of its IQOS, ZYN and VEEV brands.

Separately, the board increased its quarterly dividend by 8.8% to $1.60 per share, equivalent to $6.40 annually.
