Xanadu Stock Tumbles: What’s Going On?

Xanadu Quantum Technologies Ltd. (TSX:XNDU) shares are sliding Monday after an early pop, despite news of provisional DARPA funding. Here’s what you should know.

Xanadu Pulls Back After DARPA Funding News

Xanadu shares jumped in premarket trading Monday on word of DARPA funding. DARPA provisionally approved up to $10 million for Xanadu through its Quantum Benchmarking Initiative (QBI). The shares then reversed and sank.

The award extends Xanadu’s contract by a year and continues the company’s Stage B work.

DARPA created QBI to find out which of today’s top quantum designs could reach utility scale while staying affordable and on a realistic timeline. During the next year, Xanadu will submit regular progress reports to DARPA and direct most of the money toward accelerating key pieces of its R&D roadmap.

Xanadu Touts Photonic Approach

Xanadu argues that its light-based approach beats conventional quantum machines in a few ways. The technology works at room temperature, which cuts cooling needs. Its modular units link into networks, and its clock speeds are fast.

Xanadu says its newest machine, Aurora, proves the approach can scale by networking, and the company believes Aurora lays groundwork for future fault-tolerant quantum computers.

CEO Christian Weedbrook said staying in QBI supports Xanadu’s aim of building quantum tools with practical value in sectors from drug discovery and advanced chemistry to aerospace, defense and AI. Finishing Stage B successfully keeps Xanadu moving through the program, where designs get formally verified and validated.

Xanadu Stock Breaks Below 52-Week Low

Monday’s selling sent Xanadu below its prior 52-week low of $3.00, which the stock set on October 15. The latest trade of $2.81 sits 93.4% below the 52-week high of $42.44 from April 16.

The year has been volatile. Xanadu surged from $20.74 on April 21 to $38.44 on May 1, then collapsed to $2.81.

Shares also trade under two key averages: $4.27 over 20 days and $7.54 over 50 days. Trading below both points to a persistent downtrend. Heavy volume is backing the selloff, so many traders are taking part.

Another level to monitor is $3.00, the old floor. A rebound above it would lift the stock over its prior low.

XNDU Shares Are Slipping

XNDU Price Action: Xanadu shares were down 7.57% at $2.80 at the time of publication on Monday. The stock is trading at a new 52-week low, according to Benzinga Pro.
