House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) said Democrats would launch investigations into President Donald Trump, his family and associates if they win the House, promising that “beginning on Day 1, we’re going to hold the crooks accountable.”
Democrats Prepare Day-One Oversight Push
Speaking Thursday in Brooklyn, Jeffries accused what he called the “Trump cartel” of focusing on “enriching themselves, their family members, their friends and their donors” instead of lowering costs. The pledge builds on his August warning that “no one is going to get a pass,” when he said Democrats would “follow the facts, apply the law, and be guided by the Constitution.”
Reuters reported on Thursday that Democrats are preparing hearings, subpoenas and document demands involving Trump-linked businesses and foreign money rather than treating impeachment as the automatic first step. Jeffries has said Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) would lead Judiciary work and Rep. Robert Garcia (D-Calif.) would lead Oversight. Both panels have already pursued Trump-related inquiries.
Fresh Allegations Broaden Potential Investigation Targets
The push follows fresh allegations involving people close to Trump. AP reported U.S. Ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle was accused by Trump donor Eric Deters of asking him to pay a $100,000 credit-card bill while offering access to administration officials. Guilfoyle has denied wrongdoing. Vice President JD Vance said he did not like “anybody selling access” but wanted more facts.
Separate scrutiny has fallen on Trump advisers Chris LaCivita and James Blair after Reuters reported on Wednesday that they were paid by Republika Srpska, a highly autonomous sub-state entity within the broader framework of Bosnia and Herzegovina, to advise on local elections. Trump initially said he would fire them if their outside work conflicted with U.S. interests, then said he saw no conflict.
Kushner Scrutiny Meets Broader Campaign Strategy
Another flashpoint involves Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff. Reuters reported U.S.-Russia discussions on ending the Ukraine war expanded to include a multibillion-dollar Lukoil transaction involving investors with ties to the negotiators’ families. The White House and Treasury did not comment.
Jeffries is pairing the oversight promise with an affordability agenda that includes rolling back Trump tariffs, reversing Medicaid cuts and ending the Iran war. AP reported on Monday that Democrats are targeting Trump-won districts as they try to retake the House on Nov. 3.
