Why Is IREN Stock Falling Wednesday?

IREN Limited (NASDAQ:IREN) stock is trading lower by nearly 3% on Wednesday as investors pull back from higher-risk technology and AI infrastructure stocks.

The decline comes amid broader weakness on Wall Street. The Nasdaq is down 0.72%, while the S&P 500 has slipped 0.40%. The Dow Jones is down 0.71%, and the Russell 2000 has fallen 1.03%.

IREN’s peers across the AI infrastructure and neocloud space are also trading lower, pointing to sector-wide profit-taking rather than a company-specific catalyst.

Wednesday’s decline extends IREN’s pullback from its late-summer high. With major indexes under pressure, investors appear less willing to hold higher-volatility growth stocks.

IREN is also trading below several important moving averages. That leaves the stock vulnerable to additional selling when nearby support levels fail to hold.

The broader weakness in the Russell 2000 also signals a more defensive market backdrop. Smaller and higher-beta stocks often face greater pressure when investors reduce risk.

Technical Analysis

IREN remains below several key technical levels.

The stock is trading about 7.1% below its 20-day simple moving average and 3.5% below its 50-day SMA. It is also more than 11% below both its 100-day and 200-day SMAs.

That setup creates significant overhead resistance and could make sustained rebounds more difficult.

The moving-average picture remains mixed. The 20-day SMA is above the 50-day SMA, which provides a modest near-term bullish signal. However, the 50-day SMA remains below the 200-day SMA following an August death cross. That keeps the longer-term trend under pressure.

Momentum is also soft. The MACD remains below its signal line, while the histogram is negative. That suggests buying momentum has weakened.

Traders are watching $45.50 as a key resistance level. On the downside, $35 represents an important support zone if selling intensifies.

Earnings And Analyst Outlook

The company’s next major catalyst is expected to be its Nov. 5 earnings report.

Wall Street expects a loss of 68 cents per share, compared with earnings of $1.08 per share a year earlier. Revenue is expected to reach $223.47 million, down from $240.29 million in the year-ago period.

IREN carries a Buy consensus rating with an average price forecast of $77.33.

B. Riley Securities maintained a Buy rating on Sept. 29 and lowered its price forecast to $91. Rothschild & Co. initiated coverage on Sept. 21 with a Neutral rating and a $40 price forecast. Northland Capital Markets initiated coverage on Sept. 18 with an Outperform rating and a $99 price forecast.

Benzinga Edge Rankings

IREN has a Benzinga Edge Momentum score of 28.86, signaling relatively weak price momentum.

The reading aligns with the stock’s position below several major moving averages and its recent decline from higher levels.

IREN would likely need to regain key moving averages and improve its momentum profile before the technical picture turns more constructive.

Price Action

IREN Stock Price Activity: IREN shares were down 2.71% at $40.16 at the time of publication Wednesday, according to Benzinga Pro data.
