Health Canada has given the go-ahead to Lipocine Inc. (NASDAQ:LPCN) and its licensing partner, Verity Pharmaceuticals Inc., for TLANDO (testosterone undecanoate) capsules.
The approval allows for the use of TLANDO as a testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) in adult males suffering from conditions related to a deficiency or absence of endogenous testosterone, commonly known as male hypogonadism.
Verity Eyes 2026 Launch
Verity Pharma, which holds the exclusive commercial rights to TLANDO in North America, is currently mapping out its strategy to introduce the product to the Canadian market by the close of 2026.
This milestone stems from an exclusive license agreement struck between Lipocine and Verity Pharma in January 2024. The deal granted Verity Pharma the commercial reins for TLANDO in both the U.S. and Canada.
Under the terms of the agreement, Verity Pharma is tasked with managing regulatory affairs, driving commercialization in both territories, and spearheading the future development of the TLANDO franchise across North America.
Canadian TRT Market Opportunity
The Canadian market presents a significant opportunity for TLANDO. Annually, healthcare professionals in Canada write over 700,000 prescriptions for TRT. About half of these patients have coverage through private insurance plans.
Lipocine views the current landscape, characterized by limited promotional activity for existing TRT products, as an opening for TLANDO to secure a substantial share of this expanding market.
Presently, intramuscular injections dominate the TRT prescription market. While topical gels are also common, they come with drawbacks, such as the risk of transferring the medication to others and the inconvenience of application.
Both of these established methods require dose adjustments (titration) and have links to patient compliance challenges and elevated discontinuation rates.
Lipocine anticipates that TLANDO, as an oral therapy that does not require titration, will offer a safe, effective, and more convenient alternative.
This oral option could potentially improve patient adherence while sidestepping the transference risks associated with gels and the injection site issues tied to injectables.
LPCN Price Action: Lipocine shares were up 15.72% at $2.43 at the time of publication on Wednesday, according to Benzinga Pro data.
