Sector Concerns Weigh on Sentiment

The pressure on IREN follows weekend statements from industry leaders, including Sam Altman, Elon Musk and Dario Amodei, calling for a voluntary deceleration of frontier AI model development for safety alignment. Additionally, reports indicating that OpenAI delayed its public market debut until at least 2027, along with the Friday release of DeepSeek’s V4.1 Flash showing reduced hardware intensity, weighed on the sector.

Stock Rating

Despite the pullback, JPMorgan analyst Richard Choe upgraded IREN from Underweight to Overweight and raised the price target from $46 to $65. Choe stated that “IREN can establish itself as a top-tier neocloud provider, supported by a NVIDIA Corp (NASDAQ:NVDA) partnership.” He noted rising contract prices and added, “IREN has been able to sign additional deals throughout the year at increasingly higher prices and now has a broad mix of AI customers.”

BTIG analyst Gregory Lewis maintained a Buy rating and $80 price forecast. Lewis noted that IREN is among the few “vertically integrated (think power and compute) AI service providers” with potential power capacity over five gigawatts.

Fiscal Updates and Outlook

In its full-year fiscal 2026 update on Aug. 27, IREN reported $707 million in total revenue. Management reaffirmed targets to reach $4 billion in operational annualized recurring revenue by the end of 2026.

Technical Analysis

IREN is trading about 0.4% below its 20-day SMA ($41.56) but still about 3% above its 50-day SMA ($40.21), which suggests the near-term uptrend hasn’t fully broken even with today’s weakness. The bigger issue is the longer timeframe: the stock is trading about 12.5% below its 100-day SMA ($47.30) and about 9.2% below its 200-day SMA ($45.60), keeping the intermediate trend biased lower.

Momentum is best framed through RSI, which sits at 49.21— basically neutral — implying the stock isn’t stretched enough to force either a capitulation bounce or an exhaustion sell-off.

The moving-average structure is mixed: the 20-day SMA is above the 50-day SMA (a short-term bullish alignment), but the death cross from August (50-day below the 200-day) still hangs over the longer-term trend.
