Why Is Marvell Technology Stock Falling Monday?

Marvell Technology Inc. (NASDAQ:MRVL) stock fell about 8% in Monday’s premarket session as investors pulled back from AI-linked semiconductor stocks.

Nasdaq futures are down 1.69% while S&P 500 futures have shed 0.69%.

AI Spending Concerns Pressure Marvell

Marvell’s decline came amid a broader selloff in semiconductor stocks. Broadcom Inc. (NASDAQ:AVGO), Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (NASDAQ:AMD) and NVIDIA Corp. (NASDAQ:NVDA) fell between 3% and 6%.

The weakness came as investors reassessed the outlook for AI infrastructure spending amid a growing debate over the pace of AI development.

The Financial Times reported that calls to slow AI development over safety concerns could eventually weigh on infrastructure and capital spending. Semiconductor and memory stocks were among the hardest hit.

The debate intensified after Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei called China the “toughest dilemma” in efforts to establish a global “speed limit” on AI development. He cited competitive and military incentives to push ahead. Amodei also called for leading AI companies to coordinate on managing frontier development and safety.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk supported the broader effort, according to the Financial Times. Barclays strategist Emmanuel Cau said a greater focus on AI safety could raise questions about the pace of capital spending. Investors are also weighing what slower investment could mean for global growth and corporate earnings.

That debate is particularly relevant for Marvell. The chipmaker has significant exposure to data-center networking and custom silicon, making its growth outlook sensitive to spending on AI infrastructure.

Technical Analysis

Despite Monday’s decline, Marvell remains about 40% above its 200-day simple moving average of $154.82. That keeps its longer-term trend constructive.

However, shares are 4.6% below the 20-day SMA of $227.75 and slightly below the 100-day SMA of $219.30. The stock is also near its 50-day SMA of $216.85, making that level an important near-term test.

The relative strength index stands at 54.58, signaling neutral momentum.

Key support sits near $200.50, while resistance stands around $254.50.

Analyst Outlook

The stock carries a Buy consensus rating and an average price forecast of $295.25.

Piper Sandler recently initiated coverage with an Overweight rating and a $270 price forecast. Craig-Hallum raised its forecast to $300, while B. Riley Securities lowered its forecast to $315. Both maintained Buy ratings.

Benzinga Edge Rankings

Marvell scores 99.56 on Growth and 98.98 on Momentum, according to the Benzinga Edge scorecard. However, its Value score stands at just 2.05.

The combination reflects strong growth expectations and a premium valuation. That can amplify declines when investors reduce exposure to AI-linked growth stocks.

MRVL Price Action

Marvell Technology shares fell 8% to $217.21 in Monday’s premarket trading, according to Benzinga Pro data.
