State Street Investment Management is bringing a strategy built for university endowments to everyday investors, and it is doing so with a record-setting head start.
The asset manager launched the State Street SPDR UC Investments 90/10 Endowment Strategy Index ETF (NYSE:UCBG) on Wednesday with a $2.5 billion investment from the University of California, making it one of the largest-ever U.S.-listed ETFs.
The size of the opening investment is notable in a year when ETF issuers have been racing to introduce increasingly specialized products. Rather than chasing a narrow theme, UCBG takes a deliberately simple approach inspired by an institutional portfolio.
From University Endowment to ETF
UCBG tracks the UC Investments 90/10 Endowment Strategy Index, which allocates 90% of its portfolio to large-cap U.S. equities within the S&P 500 and 10% to short-duration, investment-grade corporate bonds.
The strategy draws inspiration from UC Investments’ $7.9 billion Blue and Gold Endowment Pool, turning an approach previously associated with a large institutional investor into an ETF accessible to a broader investor base.
That structure also gives the fund a slightly different pitch from traditional S&P 500 ETFs. Investors retain substantial exposure to large-cap stocks while adding a modest fixed-income allocation designed to provide diversification and potentially dampen some portfolio volatility.
A 90/10 Portfolio With a 6-Basis-Point Price Tag
UCBG carries an expense ratio of just 0.06%, positioning it as a low-cost alternative for investors seeking a core portfolio that combines equities and bonds in a single fund.
The timing could also work in its favor. Investors have increasingly looked beyond pure growth exposure as uncertainty around interest rates, inflation and equity valuations continues to shape markets.
Todd Rosenbluth, head of research at VettaFi, said the fund’s straightforward construction could appeal well beyond its initial institutional investor.
The launch also highlights how ETF issuers are increasingly using the wrapper to democratize strategies once largely confined to pensions, endowments and other large pools of capital.
State Street already has a major presence in the ETF market, with more than 170 U.S.-listed funds.
But UCBG arrives with something few new ETFs can claim on day one — $2.5 billion in assets and a place in ETF launch history.
