EXCLUSIVE: AI Is Connecting Moon Missions With Missile Defense, Firefly CEO Says

While artificial intelligence is often viewed as a future capability in space, Firefly Aerospace Inc. (NASDAQ:FLY) CEO Jason Kim says it is already the connective tissue across the company’s portfolio—from autonomously landing spacecraft on the Moon to processing U.S. Space Force missile warning data.

Firefly’s AI investments are no longer confined to isolated missions. Instead, the technology integrates its lunar exploration, orbital spacecraft, and defense operations into a single platform.

Driven by acquisitions and new government contracts, Firefly has expanded beyond launch vehicles into lunar landers, spacecraft, and defense software over the past two years. According to Kim, these business lines compound in value as they share a unified AI foundation.

From Acquisitions to Integration: Firefly’s Unified AI Strategy

“We recently brought more AI capabilities in-house after acquiring Space-ng,” Kim told Benzinga in an email.

The company’s AI-powered vision navigation and autonomous guidance systems enabled Blue Ghost Mission 1 to autonomously land on the Moon, he explained. The same technology supports automated docking, proximity operations and hazard-free landings on future missions.

Kim said Firefly’s products will “continue to reinforce each other more and more,” with launch vehicles supporting its spacecraft while AI software increases the value of the overall platform.

Firefly Applies Same AI Expertise to Defense Programs

Kim said Firefly’s earlier acquisition of defense technology company SciTec added another dimension to that strategy by bringing AI-powered defense software and mission data processing capabilities into the company. He pointed to SciTec’s operational FORGE system, which processes large volumes of missile warning and tracking satellite data for the U.S. Space Force, as well as Firefly’s recent $94 million Ground-Based Radar Digitization contract.

According to Kim, those programs demonstrate how AI developed across Firefly’s expanding portfolio is supporting national security applications alongside commercial space missions.

Combining Space-ng’s autonomous spacecraft technologies with SciTec’s AI defense software could enable spacecraft that “autonomously communicate and operate intelligently” across low Earth orbit, geostationary orbit, lunar orbit and beyond, Kim added.

Looking Beyond Contract Wins

Kim’s comments suggest the company is pursuing a strategy where advances in one business can strengthen another, allowing AI developed for lunar exploration to enhance defense software and vice versa.

If Firefly continues executing on that approach, software and autonomous systems could become as important to its long-term growth story as rockets and spacecraft themselves.
