House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) defended his private meeting with Jared Kushner on Monday, saying he agreed to discuss the affordability crisis while vowing Democrats would “hold every single member of the Trump cartel accountable” if they win the House in November.
Jeffries Defends Meeting Amid Democratic Backlash
“He asked for a meeting, and I took it to discuss the affordability crisis that exists,” Jeffries said in a video posted on X. AP reported over the weekend that the Kushner-Jeffries meeting covered housing, immigration and the cost of living, and that Kushner suggested Jeffries meet White House chief of staff, Susie Wiles.
Jeffries pushed back against criticism that speaking with President Donald Trump’s son-in-law signaled a softer approach toward the administration.
“I shouldn’t have to say it, but I am. No one is going to get a pass,” Jeffries said. “We’re gonna follow the facts, apply the law, and be guided by the Constitution beginning on day one. And hold the crooks accountable.”
He said Democrats had “battled” the administration over tariffs, Medicaid, Jeffrey Epstein, nutrition assistance, the Affordable Care Act, Iran and ICE funding.
“Pam Bondi is gone. Kristi Noem is gone, and we’re just getting started,” Jeffries added.
Benzinga reached out to the White House for comment on Jeffries’ post but did not get an immediate response.
Democrats Prepare For Aggressive House Oversight
The meeting carries heightened stakes because Jeffries would be the leading candidate for speaker if Democrats capture the House. Trump recently said he would “probably get along” with Jeffries if Democrats take control, calling him “a nice guy.”
Reuters reported this month that Democrats are preparing investigations, subpoenas and records requests involving Trump-linked businesses, administration donors and government contracts if they regain subpoena power. Their emerging strategy emphasizes evidence-gathering rather than immediate impeachment. Jeffries has previously warned Trump officials about potential post-administration scrutiny.
Midterm Polling Boosts Democrats’ Hopes
Polling has also strengthened Democrats’ hopes. A Reuters/Ipsos survey found more registered voters would back Democratic congressional candidates if elections were held now, while Trump’s approval has fallen to 33%.
Jeffries has kept economic pressure central to his midterm message. He recently called Trump’s Iran war “Operation Epic Failure” while blaming the conflict for higher costs.
“People are drowning in this failed economy and are demanding action,” Jeffries said. “We have a responsibility to deal with the fact that life is too expensive. And that’s what we intend to do.”
