EXCLUSIVE: Nvidia Partner Ouster Says Physical AI Is Moving From ‘Demo To Deployment’

For much of the AI boom, investors have focused on smarter models, faster chips and bigger training clusters. Nvidia Corp (NASDAQ:NVDA) partner Ouster, Inc. (NASDAQ:OUST) says the next chapter is less about proving the technology works—and more about deploying it at scale.

In an exclusive email interview with Benzinga, Ouster CEO and co-founder Angus Pacala said the Physical AI industry is crossing the chasm from “demo to deployment,” with mature pilots increasingly becoming real-world production deployments.

Physical AI Is Entering Its Commercialization Phase

Pacala said what gives Ouster greater confidence today than a year ago is not simply growing customer interest, but a noticeable change in where customers are in their adoption cycle.

“Physical AI is crossing the chasm from ‘demo to deployment,’” he said, adding that while new customers continue launching early-stage programs, “mature pilots and prototypes are actively moving into production.” He described the company as being in “a real deployment cycle” across industrial, smart infrastructure, robotics and automotive customers.

That distinction matters because it suggests the industry’s bottleneck may be shifting. Instead of convincing customers to experiment with autonomous systems, companies are increasingly being asked to help customers deploy them safely and reliably in real-world environments.

Ouster has been expanding its collaboration with Nvidia across the Jetson robotics platform and DRIVE Hyperion autonomous vehicle platform, positioning its sensing technology within Nvidia’s broader Physical AI ecosystem.

Deployment, Not Intelligence, Is Becoming the Next Challenge

Pacala argues that building a working robot is no longer the hardest problem.

“The question should be less ‘does it work?’ and more on whether it can work every day for years without hurting someone or something,” he said. “That’s why functional safety and the quality of the underlying sensor and perception platform matter so much.”

He said the industry is increasingly realizing that building a prototype is “one thing,” but making a system safe and reliable enough for real-world deployment is “something completely different.”

That philosophy also shapes Ouster’s strategy. Rather than positioning itself as simply a lidar manufacturer, the company increasingly describes itself as offering a unified sensing and perception platform that combines digital lidar, cameras, AI compute and perception software to help customers accelerate deployment.

Why Investors Should Watch Deployment Metrics

For investors, Pacala’s comments point to a subtle but important shift in how the Physical AI market may evolve.

Much of the conversation around AI has centered on model performance and computing power. But if autonomous systems are moving beyond pilots and into commercial deployments, the next competitive advantage may lie in the technologies that enable reliable, production-scale operation rather than simply demonstrating technical capability.

Whether that transition continues will likely depend less on the number of new AI prototypes announced and more on how many of today’s pilots become tomorrow’s deployed systems—a trend Pacala argues is already underway.
