Tempus AI Soars as Merck-Moderna Cancer Trial Validates Personalis Acquisition

Shares of Tempus AI Inc (NASDAQ:TEM) are surging Wednesday morning as traders connected the dots between a landmark clinical trial win and Tempus’s recent multi-billion dollar acquisition deal. Here’s what investors need to know.

Landmark mRNA Trial Delivers Breakthrough Results

The rally follows Phase 3 trial results released Wednesday morning by Merck & Co Inc and Moderna Inc. The pharmaceutical partners revealed that their INTerpath-001 trial evaluating intismeran autogene, a custom mRNA-based individualized neoantigen therapy paired with Keytruda, significantly improved recurrence-free survival in resected melanoma patients.

The news represents the first successful Phase 3 readout for a custom mRNA-based cancer treatment.

The Key Connection: Personalis Infrastructure Drives the Vaccine

While Merck and Moderna lead the drug development, the underlying engine powering the personalized vaccine is Personalis Inc’s advanced genomic tumor-profiling technology. Moderna utilizes Personalis’s sequencing platform to analyze each patient’s unique tumor tissue and identify specific neoantigens needed to manufacture custom doses.

That technological link directly benefits Tempus AI, which previously partnered with Personalis to commercialize minimal residual disease tests and agreed to acquire Personalis for $1.5 billion last month.

By acquiring Personalis, Tempus inherits the critical sequencing infrastructure supporting Moderna’s therapeutic program just as it passes its biggest regulatory and clinical milestone to date.

Tempus CEO Eric Lefkofsky highlighted the connection on social media Wednesday, congratulating Moderna and Merck on the Phase 3 victory while noting Tempus’s pride in partnering with Moderna to support the breakthrough program.

TEM Shares Surge Wednesday Morning

TEM Price Action: Tempus AI shares were up 17.77% at $58.13 at the time of publication on Wednesday, according to Benzinga Pro data.
