Google’s latest AI leadership shake-up wasn’t confined to the executive suite.
Within a day of Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL) (NASDAQ:GOOG) announcing that Demis Hassabis would step into a broader role as Chair of Google DeepMind and Chief Scientist of Alphabet, one of the company’s longest-serving AI pioneers revealed he was heading in the opposite direction.
After 27 years at Google, Jeff Dean announced Thursday that he is leaving to co-found DiscoLoop AI alongside fellow Google AI veterans Sanjay Ghemawat, Oriol Vinyals and Quoc Viet Le, assembling one of the most accomplished founding teams in artificial intelligence.
One Week, Two Very Different Announcements
Google said Hassabis’ new role will allow him to focus on the company’s long-term AI strategy and scientific breakthroughs, while Google DeepMind CTO Koray Kavukcuoglu will take over day-to-day leadership of the organization. The move comes as Alphabet seeks to accelerate its next phase of AI development while expanding efforts in areas such as scientific research and healthcare.
Less than 24 hours later, Dean published a farewell message reflecting on nearly three decades at Google, where he watched the company grow from 25 people to more than 190,000. He said he was excited to begin a new chapter at DiscoLoop AI with longtime collaborators Ghemawat, Vinyals and Le.
Those names are significant. Dean helped build much of Google’s technical foundation and later became one of the company’s most influential AI leaders. Ghemawat co-created foundational distributed computing systems, while Vinyals and Le were among the key researchers behind Google’s modern AI efforts.
The Next Wave May Come From AI Veterans
Taken together, the announcements highlight a broader shift taking shape across the AI industry. Rather than simply moving between established AI labs, some of the researchers who helped build today’s leading AI systems are now launching entirely new ventures of their own.
Google has spent years attracting and retaining many of the world’s top AI researchers. Now, an increasing number of those researchers are becoming founders themselves, taking decades of experience into startups focused on the next generation of AI applications.
For investors, the timing is hard to ignore. As Alphabet reorganizes its AI leadership for what CEO Sundar Pichai called the company’s “next chapter of AI momentum,” one of the architects behind that momentum is already starting his next company.
Whether DiscoLoop AI ultimately becomes a partner, a niche research lab or a future competitor remains to be seen, but its founding team alone ensures it will be one of the industry’s most closely watched AI startups.
