Clinical Trial Results Show Extended Benefits for REGENXBIO Retinal Treatments

REGENXBIO Inc. (NASDAQ:RGNX) on Saturday shared long-term clinical trial findings for its experimental gene therapy surabgene lomparvovec (sura-vec, ABBV-RGX-314) targeting wet age-related macular degeneration (wet AMD) and diabetic retinopathy (DR).

Long-Term Efficacy In Wet AMD Treatment

Data presented at the American Society of Retina Specialists Annual Meeting demonstrated that subretinal delivery of sura-vec maintained or enhanced visual acuity over five years in wet AMD patients within Cohorts 3 and 4 of its Phase 1/2a trial.

Participants experienced significant reductions in anti-VEGF treatment demands without new safety issues or intraocular inflammation among study completers.

In an external comparative study, sura-vec recipients preserved vision, achieved superior visual acuity outcomes, experienced less fluctuation in central retinal thickness, and required far fewer injections after one year compared to real-world anti-VEGF control groups.

Pivotal phase ATMOSPHERE and ASCENT trials, which compare sura-vec against ranibizumab and aflibercept across more than 1,200 subjects, remain on track to release topline results alongside AbbVie Inc. (NYSE:ABBV) in late 2026.

Durable Results In Diabetic Retinopathy

For diabetic retinopathy, extended results from the Phase 2 ALTITUDE trial showed that a single in-office suprachoroidal administration of sura-vec sustained positive safety and performance through 2.5 years.

Among participants receiving Dose Level 3 alongside brief topical steroid regimens, 55% attained a two-step or greater improvement on the Diabetic Retinopathy Severity Scale without needing extra therapy.

Furthermore, 70% of these patients remained free from vision-threatening complications. As of May 25, 2026, no cases of intraocular inflammation were reported in this group.

Raises $100 Million Via Equity

The company on Friday priced a public stock offering comprising approximately 10 million shares at $9.00 each and 1.11 million pre-funded warrants at $8.9999 apiece, with gross proceeds of around $100 million.

RGNX Price Action: Regenxbio shares were up 5.16% at $10.40 at the time of publication on Monday, according to Benzinga Pro data.
