Gov. Jay Robert ‘JB’ Pritzker (D-IL) criticized President Donald Trump on Thursday, accusing the latter of prioritizing the reflecting pool at the Lincoln Memorial over rising gas prices.
Gas Prices Hit Close To $5/Gallon
In a post on X, Pritzker quoted a post by PopBase that cited Trump saying that oil prices were still below $100/bbl and that it wasn’t a “big price to pay” to deter Iran from having nuclear weapons.
“When you go to fill your tank for almost $5,” Pritzker said, “remember that Donald Trump is too busy showing off that his pool is bigger than skyscrapers,” the Illinois Governor said.
Trump Shows Off Pool
Recently, Trump shared that the renovations to the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool were completed after workers cleaned it and repainted it to the “American flag blue” shade. He also showcased how the pool was taller than skyscrapers.
Trump’s pool was criticized by Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass), who slammed the President for prioritizing the pool over higher gasoline, grocery and health care costs.
The project cost $13.1 million and has faced criticism from the Cultural Landscape Foundation, whose founder, Charles Birnbaum, filed a lawsuit, alleging that the blue coating amounted to “altering the historic character” without authority.
U.S. Gas Prices
Gas prices further fell as the national average price for a gallon on Thursday was $4.241, according to the American Automobile Association (AAA). Prices in California also fell below the $6/gallon mark following weeks of high costs, with the average price in the state at $5.976/gallon.
Average prices in states like Nevada, Alaska, Hawaii, Washington and Oregon also remained above the $5/gallon mark on Thursday.
Meanwhile, Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) slammed Trump’s Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, accusing him of downplaying the effects of high gas prices after the latter had called the inflation a “blip” during a Senate committee hearing.
